Introduction

European Short Sea Freight Market Analytics is a research platform found by Mr. Ognyan Kostadinov from Varna, Bulgaria, as a part of his Ph.D. study work. The scope of this research work is European short sea divided in two divisions: European adjacent seas and European inland waterways

I. European adjacent seas sector divided by six subsectors:

  • North European seas (Norwegian Sea – North Sea – Baltic Sea)
  • Mediterranean sea
  • Black sea (including Azov Sea)
  • North European seas – Mediterranean Sea traffic in both directions
  • North European seas – Black sea (incl. Azov Sea) traffic in both directions
  • Mediterranean sea – Black sea (incl. Azov Sea) traffic in both directions

Subsector’s eight curves:

European Short Sea Average T/C equivalent in USD per DWAT tone curves in following ranges:

  • DWAT 2000 - 3500 MT
  • DWAT 3500 - 5000 MT
  • DWAT 5000 - 6500 MT
  • DWAT 6500 - 8000 MT
  • DWAT 8000 - 9500 MT
  • Average European Short Sea Average T/C equivalent in USD per DTW tone curves
  • BDI:1000 (Baltic Dry Index divided by 1000)
  • Regional gasoil prices in USD per KG

II. European inland waterways sector divided by two subsectors:

  • Rhine – Main Rivers
  • Danube River

Subsector’s six curves:

European Inland Waterways Average T/C equivalent in Euro per a horsepower curves in following ranges:

  • up to 1500 hp
  • 1500-3000 hp
  • over  3000 hp
  • Average European Inland Waterways Average T/C equivalent in Euro per a horsepower
  • BDI:1000 (Baltic Dry Index divided by 1000)
  • Regional gasoil prices in Euro per KG

III. Front page

Three graphics as follows:

  • European Short Sea Average T/C equivalent in USD per DWAT (as an average of all six subsectors)
  • Relative Fluctuations of European Short Sea Average T/C equivalent per DWAT compared with BDI:1000
  • European Inland Waterways Average T/C equivalent in Euro per a horsepower (as an average of both subsectors)

IV. Calculations:

  • T/C equivalent calculated on basis standard formula:
  • T/C equivalent = (Net Freight – Voy.Exp.) : Voyage total days

Net Freight = Freight less commissions

Voy.Exp.= Voyage expenses for fuel and disbursement accounts

Voyage total days = duration of whole voyage - time for ballast trip plus time for cargo trip till discharge completion in days

  • The Curves measuring T/C equivalent are calculated basis T/C equivalent:
  • Short sea curve figures = T/C equivalent : DWAT
  • Inland waterways curve figures = T/C equivalent : Horsepower

  • Relative Fluctuation Curve is calculated basis formula:

  • RF = BDI:1000 – Average T/C equivalent : DWAT

RF – Relative Fluctuation Curve of Average T/C equivalent compared with BDI:1000

Average T/C equivalent - Average T/C equivalent for European Short Seasector divided by vessel DWAT

BDI:1000 – Baltic Dry Index divided by 1000
